What makes Milagro Harvest Company different?

What makes us different starts with where our fruit comes from. Every jar begins with fruit grown right here in Albuquerque, picked from trees that belong to our neighbors rather than somewhere anonymous and far away. When someone trusts us with the peaches or apricots their tree worked all season to produce, we are welcomed into a relationship built on trust.
That locality is inseparable from our commitment to sustainability. Harvesting fruit that would otherwise go unused, working within a food system that values what is grown nearby, and reducing the distance between tree and table are not marketing points for us. They are the actual foundation the jam is made.
Underneath all of it is community care and connection. Our story took a detour before it came back to jam, and what brought us back was the realization that this work is about people as much as it is about fruit. Every jar carries that web of relationships between neighbors, trees, and the community that makes this possible.
So what makes us different is not a secret ingredient. It is that our jam could only be made here, by people who care about Albuquerque, New Mexico and the community that shares it with us.
We get our fruit directly from the community here in Albuquerque. Neighbors with fruit trees in their yards invite us in when their fruits are ready and often more than a single household could use before it goes to waste. We have spent 10 years building relationships with the people who grow the fruit, tree by tree and yard by yard.
How do you get your fruit?

Naming a jam is one of our favorite parts of the process! A name is where the story of that particular batch gets to live on, from something that happened while we were picking or standing under the branches.
Sometimes a name points to something unique about the ingredients themselves, like a variant of fruit a homeowner has grown for years or a combination of fruit and spice that surprised us the first time we tasted it together. Sometimes it comes from a story a homeowner told us while we filled our crates, a memory tied to when the tree was planted or who planted it. Sometimes it is simply something that made us laugh in the moment, an offhand comment, a joke about the heat, or a bird that beat us to the best branch.
We are preserving a small piece of the afternoon the fruit came from. When you open a jar, you are also opening a little window into the yard, tree, and conversation that made it.
One of our favorite jams is Plum Pounder …. why?
We moved throughout our space, trading a morter between 4 people, taking turns grinding and pounding cardamom seeds with purple stained hands.
